i read in the news that the fare for transportation will rise again. seriously, does it look like people can afford to lose anymore money. when mayor bloomberg was re elected, he promised to fix the mta, but nothing has happen so far. bloomberg is a rich man, billionaire. why doesn't he give some of his money to the mta to fix the problem instead of going after the struggling people?

If Bloomberg promised to "fix the MTA" it was nothing but an empty campaign promise that shouldn't have really been taken seriously. He can't really do anything substantial with the MTA, it's out of his hands -- the MTA isn't even a city-run agency. As of now, in any case, he's certainly not asking for a fare hike; in fact he's asking the state to find a way to fund MTA's operations without a fare increase.

The MTA is a public authority chartered by New York State; it's not run by the city. The governor and legislature have much more power over funding it, and its general operation, than NYC's mayor does. Point your blame in the right direction by leaning on your state senator and the governor to deal with this, not the mayor. Remember that the MTA handles transportation throughout the region, not just in the city, so the city's needs aren't always seen as the most important priority by all of the people who make the management decisions.

Well, according to a state think tank, they're suggest that the MTA should raise the fare on subways and buses by 35-cents from $2.25 to $2.60. They also suggest that the cash strapped transit agency, raise the price for a monthly unlimited ride MetroCard from the current $89 to $100 or more. However, the MTA is not taking any action on this, but they are considering cutting service this year, and you thank the people in Albany for screwing up.

Yes, the Mayor said in his re-election bid that he "will fix the MTA", however, he does run the transit authority. The State of New York does.

Good luck

they can afford it just fine. mathematically speaking, the percentage of ones income spent on transportation has never gone up. not since 1904 and the nickel subway fare. In fact, the percentage has gone down in the last twenty years with the introduction of metrocard; meaning you are now spending a smaller percentage of your pay on transportation than you did in 1990. We've had it easy. other cities charge way more for transportation. Washington charges a maximum of more than double New York's during peak periods. Their system runs less, doesn't run at all at night, and doesn't go as far, but charges more.
