Question:
New York advise?!?
2008-07-30 09:05:30 UTC
I am going to NY with a small group in the fall. We are driving from Ohio on a Thursday and have all day Fri/Sat - then we're leaving Sunday. On Friday night we're going to Broaway, but we can't decide what we want to see. Any advise?

Also, can you suggest anything that we must see during those two days? Any tours or anything? We're staying in the Mariott Marquis in Manhattan, so we're really close to everything.

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

I think you should come in October 4-5th weekend for Open House NY that allows you to enter participating museums free, including restricted areas or other locations that participating.

Which Broadway show to go to kind of depends on what you might be into, i.e. what is your age? Would you appreciate something like South Pacific - time period WWII? It's a classic Broadway show, but if you're 20 you might not appreciate the time period? I think a safe bet is Mama Mia, if you haven't seen it - it's a lot of fun.

If it was me, I'd go to South Pacific or Boeing Boeing. But then I'm old. I took my teenage daughter to Mama Mia and she was up dancing on her seat. There is always a modern classic like Rent - the play is much better than the movie.

For what to do - shopping on 5th Ave. Go to the top of the Empire State building (you will wait in line for awhile, there is limited capacity at the top, they queue you up around the 85th floor). Get a deli sandwich and cheese cake at one of the delis (Carnegie or Stage) on 7th Ave.

here are some suggestions and tips from our personal experience:

we went to NY for a week and stayed at the Hilton Embassy Suites.

we had a blast!!!

there's a book called Lonely Planet (NYC)

it is a really really helpful book for tourists like us because it includes walking tours, etc, and places to eat.

you should visit Serendipity for dessert :)

by the way, instead of waiting for hours in line to get to the statue of liberty, you may opt to have the NY waterway tour instead. This way, you will save enough time to tour other parts of the city :)

there's also the famous BULL at the financial district :)

you should also try the yummiest Pizza Margherita at 'Lil Frankie in East Village ^,^

if you have more time, try walking the stretch of Brooklyn Bridge.

this serves as an exercise too.. hihihi

also, do visit Saint Patricks's Cathedral at 5th avenue.

don't miss to go inside.

it's wonderful!!!

we also went to Top of the Rock instead of the Empire State Building to avoid the long line hihihi because we were afraid we won't have enough time to see other parts of NYC :)

for shopping, you may want to visit Century 21, just across the former WTC.

you should have lunch/brunch at Cafe lalo!!! or at Sarabeth's :)

we chose Cafe Lalo hihihi because of the ambiance and because it's famous.

To relax, try having a picnic at Central Park.

we chose to eat at the top of one huge rock there to have e good view of the whole central park :)

then, we went to MET (entrance is by donation only, you don't have to give 20 USD)

if you're a techie like my friends, you may want to visit the MAC store. it is now a tourist spot because of its unique architecture :p

DON'T MISS eating at PARADOU!!!

it's a MUST!!!

trust me on this!

you also gotta watch a broadway show! definitely!

there's WICKED and SPAMALOT :)

It depends on what kind of thing you like, but some good ones are:

Mamma Mia (fun upbeat)

Phantom of the Opera (always good, more of a classic)

Hairspray (fun)

Legally Blonde (fun)

Best NYC guide I have ever seen and I live here- it will tell you how to get around, where to go, shows to see, how to book them, subway directions, maps, restaurants, tours- both of the city and of the food of the city- just EVERYTHING!
