While we don't have the CHIP and PIN system in the US (it is only in the UK and Ireland), stores that have separate terminals at the checkout as well as ticket vending machines will accept a PIN for a Debit type transaction (using the magnetic strip on your card). These terminals will also accept credit transactions without need for a PIN. You will find, however, that restaurants are still in the 'give the card to the server who will use a reader and then bring the card back with a receipt for you to sign.

As far as the CHIP goes it isn't widely accepted yet but it is usable many supermarkets and some fast food places as well as drug chain store (Duane Reade, Walgreens, CVS).

Department stores don't have the CHIP reader capability yet.

Whether your card would work with the CHIP is not known. It would most likely work only with the use of the magnetic strip method.

Have a good flight and enjoy your stay in NY.

"Chip and PIN" is called EMV, and only a small percentage of US retailers accept it right now. If you flip your card over and it has a magnetic stripe down the back, it should still work in the US because merchants can swipe it.

When are you coming to the US? Many retailers will be upgrading to EMV-certified credit card terminals over the next two years because Visa is changing their liability for merchants that do not accept EMV by October 2015.

I live in California and help people with credit issues. Your questions is my first introduction to chip and pin. Had zero knowledge of the existence of chip and pin before your question. So I guess the simple answer is true; No chip and pin here, at least not on the west coast of the US.

VERY VERY limited chip and pin.

Found out when I tried to get a chip and pin to take to Ireland this year.

Most of the stores want you to sign , so you may be asked for ID. They are behind Europe on chip & pin.

I'm pretty sure it's a UK thing. I live in the US (New York and Philadelphia) and had to look up what it even was lol. In short, no we do not use chip and pin

Rarely, mostly you are asked to sign on an LCD screen that is attached to the till (the kind of thing you sign for a parcel on).
