NYC is great! You should really come and visit it. I suggest you to go to the Rockefeller Center. It is really cool and fun to be in there, you would enjoy the shops, museums, and the city itself. I also would suggest you to visit Time Square and Broadway Theater. There are awesome areas and places in New York City. You will love it! Enjoy!

I agree with hk, but would go one step further: just stay away from Times Square in general....unless HUGE crowds of tourists around boring chain stores is your idea of a good time. Then, go for it. For me, though,Times Square lost any charm it had YEARS ago. I don't need to go to NY just to go to a disney store or a virgin megastore.

But, getting on to what you SHOULD do:

1. Staten Island ferry at dusk. There is no better view of the city. And its free!

2. Go to a show. My wife and I went to NY 2 months ago. A play by one of the Cohen brothers(I forget which one), "Almost An Evening" was showing off-broadway (Bleecker St., I think....) I recommend that one, if it is still playing. Not the greatest play, but it was very good, and one of the stars was "Larry" from Perfect Strangers! And, I know tickets have gotten cheaper since we were there!

3. If you like Russian food, then Brighton Beach should definitely be on your list of places to go. (They have quite a few stores, as well.) I recommend "Cafe Euroasia," which is just off the main street. GREAT food, at very cheap prices. Don't be surprised when your waitress doesn't speak English, though. You also shouldn't be surprised if you see the Russian version of Tony Soprano there. Brighton Beach is home to the Russian mob, after all. Oh well, it gave the place a little bit more ambiance! The food really was spectacular...probably the best my wife and I had in the city. (Which is saying something, because we had some great food while we were there!) My wife and I spent right around $20 total there....definetly worth the LONG train ride!

4. If you take my last advice, you might as well go to Coney Island, as well. Its right there, about 10 blocks away.

5. Farmers market in Union Square. We didn't buy anything, no way to keep it fresh, but my wife and I walked through the market most days we were there. Our hotel was on 17th, between 2nd and 3rd, really close to union square, so we would walk through the market to begin each day.

6. Cafe Reggio, in Greenwich Village. Great cafe! It has mixed reviews online, but my wife and I loved the place. The chairs are pretty uncomfortable, but the coffee is great. We didn't try the food, but it all sounded good.

7. The Ethiopian restaurant across the street from Cafe Reggio was some of the best Ethiopian food I've had!!!`

Well, my list was pretty gender-neutral. I'm not a woman, so I can't really give woman-specific advice, but I hope it helped, a little.

Enjoy NYC!!!!

edit: I've never been there myself, but I would recommend against the advice of the person a few below me who recommended SERENDIPITY 3. From all the reviews I've read on-line, and by the couple of people I know that have gone there, the service is TERRIBLE, even for NYC standards, the food is mediocre at best, it is overpriced (Again, even for NYC standards) and the lines are huge (filled only with tourists. From what I understand, the locals don't really go there. And, even when I AM a tourist, I don't like to feel like one. Go to where the locals go. That is always the best advice when traveling!)

okay anywhere in soho to shop def! but if your looking for a cheap deal..try chinatown! they have everything (fake fendi's, dolce & gabana etc) :) also if you get a chance, please go see a broadway show...there is nothing like it! at night..a walk around central park or even a horse & carriage ride around there is beautiful! resturants- it depends what kind of food..they have everything! and please please make sure to go to a bar/club- most are open til 5am..and afterwards, you can go get pizza or a hotdog (yes lots of people will be out) whatever you do..stay away from time square on a friday night or saturday afternoon-what a disaster. too many people! and for a spa..try bliss spa! its nice there :)

here are some suggestions and tips from our personal experience:

we went to NY for a week.

we had a blast!!!

you should visit Serendipity for dessert :)

there's a book called Lonely Planet (NYC)

it is a really really helpful book for tourists like us because it includes walking tours, etc, and places to eat.

by the way, instead of waiting for hours in line to get to the statue of liberty, you may opt to have the NY waterway tour instead. This way, you will save enough time to tour other parts of the city :)

there's also the famous BULL at the financial district :)

you should also try the yummiest Pizza Margherita at 'Lil Frankie in East Village ^,^

if you have more time, try walking the stretch of Brooklyn Bridge.

this serves as an exercise too.. hihihi

also, do visit Saint Patricks's Cathedral at 5th avenue.

don't miss to go inside.

it's wonderful!!!

we also went to Top of the Rock instead of the Empire State Building to avoid the long line hihihi because we were afraid we won't have enough time to see other parts of NYC :)

for shopping, you may want to visit Century 21, just across the former WTC.

http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/livin-as-new-yorkers-do-day-4.html

you should have lunch/brunch at Cafe lalo!!! or at Sarabeth's :)

we chose Cafe Lalo hihihi because of the ambiance and because it's famous.

To relax, try having a picnic at Central Park.

http://jotan23.blogspot.com/2008/03/labor-day-in-nyc-day-5.html

we chose to eat at the top of one huge rock there tp have e good view of the whole central park :)

then, we went to MET (entrance is by donation only, you don't have to give 20 USD)

if you're a techie like my friends, you may want to visit the MAC store. it is now a tourist spot because of its unique architecture :p

DON'T MISS eating at PARADOU!!!

it's a MUST!!!

trust me on this!

you also gotta watch a broadway show! definitely!

there's WICKED and SPAMALOT :)
