I am bicurious and looking for some cool LESBIAN bars to go in NYC. Not so much trendy Wendy, something casual with good music, a large selection and variety/ages of women, and a friendly fun atmosphere. Cheap drinks would be helpful! Thanks so much!

Been a decade since i was a nu yawka, but here's some tips:

Cattyshack

249 Fourth Ave., Park Slope, Brooklyn, 718-230-5740

This two-story playland owned by Meow Mix’s Brooke Webster has given New York’s moribund dyke nightlife a much-needed shot in the arm. The weekend parties, which feature thong-clad girls writhing on stripper poles, are hip enough to pull in a mix of faux-hawks, bridge-and-tunnel singles, celesbians, and even a spattering of boys. The huge roof deck—there’s a line in summer—divey downstairs dance floor, and multiroomed second-story lounge let girls hook up, get down, and see and be seen, all under one roof.

Twenty-something slacker babes hang at Meow Mix, New York's newest lesbian bar, art, and performance space. Catch lesbian rock band performances, dance to your favorite '70s hits or glimpse celebrities who sometimes drop in, such as Chastity Bono and Ellen De Generes. 269 E. Houston at Suffolk. Tel: 212-673-9143.

Rubyfruit Bar & Grill is a cozy spot that sports a crown motif, comfy couches and a down-to-earth crowd of women. Celebs including Melissa Etheridge and Martina Navratilova have hung out in the bar upstairs. 531 Hudson St., Tel: 212-929-3343.

Henrietta Hudson is a West Village gathering spot that attracts a wide mix of lesbians, from professionals to grunge girls. Madonna has even stopped in to scout dancers for her Girlie Show. Be sure to greet Storme de Larverie, Henrietta's 70-something security girl and one of the first male impersonators to tour the country in the world-famous Jewel Box Review. 438 Hudson St. Tel: 212-924-3347.

Also in the West Village, just around the corner from hopping gay restaurant Universal Grill and a five-minute walk from Henrietta Hudson, you'll find Crazy Nanny's. Nanny's is a popular two-level bar with dance floor and pool table that attracts a down-to-earth, diverse crowd, from rock-and-roll chicks to celebratory softball team members. On weekends Nanny's is usually packed (cover varies), and on some nights patrons can enjoy live entertainment.

When you think of Julie's, think pastels and suburban living. This diminutive bar, which could double for a Holiday Inn lounge near an airport, is where midtown office managers stop for a drink before the trek home to New Jersey. 204 E. 58th St. Tel: 212-688-1294.

At Clit Club, the music is hot and the women are hotter. Women of all ages and sizes shed their blouses and sweat on the packed dance floor. Go-go dancers groove on the main bar, and in the dimly lit basement you'll find racy videos and a pool table. 432 W. 14th St. Tel: 212-529-3300.

There's a start. Make one hook-up at any of the above, and you'll have a guide to the rest of the scene.

WOW! So much fun in store for you. A car is not recommended. Manhattan is really easy to get around and it is a super walking city, so bring comfy shoes. Taxis are easily available during non-rush hours (eg when people are going to or from work) and the cab shift changes at 4pm so the cabs may be tight then. The subway system is a breeze to figure out and they have maps everywhere...the system is color coded. Despite what you may hear, NYers are very helpful...don't be put off by the quick talking, abrupt manner of some...it's just NY...people will help - though you should be street smart and walk around confidently and not dazed and confused. The bus system is also excellent. NYC is pretty much laid out on the grid system. So you have many good choices. Now as for what to see. First, get a good tour map. Then I recommend you take the BIG APPLE double decker tour bus for an overview of the city. There are several different neighborhoods so I'll highlight these and what to see: Upper East Side: Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, Whitney Museum. Walk up and down Madison Avenue for awesome shops and boutiques 96th - 57th st. Walk Park Avenue for architecture all the way to Grand Central Terminal and see the treasures located within. Walk along 5th Avenue to see/go in and out of Central Park - go for a run, go to the Central Park Zoo, go to the Carousel, go for a gondola ride at the boat house. UPPER WEST SIDE: Museum of Natural History -a must! on Central Park West, Walk along Columbus Avenue. Visit the West side of Central Park and pay respects to John Lennon's Strawberry Fields. MIDTOWN: Shopping - 57th St (Chanel and the gang), Fifth Avenue - must see Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Saks and FAO Schwartz - many other fun stores. St. Patrick's Cathedral Museum of Modern Art Sony Bldg Rockefeller Center Go west to awesome new Time Warner center and visit the new Mandarin Hotel bar/restaurant for awesome view and treats! Oh, Bloomingdale's is on 59th St and Lexington. Empire State Bldg. The Intrepid Aircraft Museum is fascinating and on the West side...worth the visit even if you have no kids. CHELSEA: Walk around the blooming area sprouting awesome restaurants and shops. Chelsea Pier is fun. WALL ST: Pay respects to the 9/11 victims and heroes at the WTC site., Walk Wall St., visit the Chase Hdqtrs, Federal Reserve. Seaport area is great to see. THE VILLAGE: Funky shops in the West Village. Walk through the NYU Washington Square Park. The East Village has some shops from new artists and designers SOHO: Great galleries and shops on n off West Broadway. Walk thru to Little Italy for awesome meals and desserts...walk through Chinatown. CANAL STREET has stall after stall of Designer "copies"...bring cash and bargain and watch your purse! These should put an awesome smile on your face. Bring your camera and takes lots of photos to remember your trip. You'll have a blast! OH...BUY this weekly magazine: TIMEOUT NEW YORK on any newstand to see what's going on each week/day. :)
