My husband and I are planning on going to New York next year, and would also like to see Niagra Falls, and go to Toronto. How long of a drive is it from New York City to Niagra falls and Toronto? Would it be better to get a train to go there or fly?

By car, it takes about 8 hours to drive from NYC to Buffalo. Niagara Falls from Buffalo takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Niagara Falls to Toronto takes about two hours.
The train takes about the same amount of time, believe it or not, and sometimes longer (Amtrak is notorious for breakdowns), and I think because of the border it takes even longer because of customs.
I'd fly to Buffalo and rent a car. Make sure you bring a passport, because it's required for entry into Canada.

From the GW get on the Major Deegan Expressway Northbound.AKA Interstate 87.Follow 87 north and cross the Tappan Z bridge.Continue on until you reach Route 17 and 86. [only goes 1 direction] Follow 17/86 most of the way passing The Catskills region,Binghamton and Elmira. Then continue on until you reach Interstate 390 towards Rochester. When you come to the New York Thruway which is Interstate 90 go westbound. You are now about an hour and a half away from the falls. You want to pass the great city of Buffalo and pick up 190 North there will be signs directing you to the falls. I usually take the Niagara Falls Blvd exit. Route 62. There you will find many hotels and restaurant's of sorts. If you need additional info contact me I have been to the falls 4 times and plan on going back there soon.Have a great trip! It should take you less than 6.5 hours.

It is about an hours drive from New York City to Niagra Falls. But you will not be allowed to drive in New York State unless you have an international drivers license. Toronto is in Canada. Why would you want to go to Canada? Its full of Canadians! Thats the border where we should be building a wall . If you do go to Canada (??) remember not to accept the worthless canadian money .

Upstate New York is beautiful. If you have the time to spare, I would highly recommend Amtrak over flying.
If you have MORE time to spare, I'd even recommend renting a care and and making an overnight stop in the Finger Lakes region (Ithaca). There are some great hikes, and some even greater wineries. It takes about four hours to get there from NYC, then another 3 1/2 to Niagara Falls.

My friend, the link below show the total travel time between New York City, Niagra Fall and Toronto by car.
If you're considering taking the train or flying, the nearest city to Niagara Fall will be Buffalo.
Good luck

I went my with my family by car to Niagara Falls before and with traffic it took over 8 hrs just to get there :\ && it takes about another 1-2 to get to Toronto from Niagara Falls. I say you should just take the plane from NYC.
Cause trust me, it's REALLY REALLY painful to sit in a car for so long >.<

It takes about 8 hours to get to Niagara falls from NYC. I would recommend taking a train or flight, if you have kids.

The shortest route is 475 miles (8 hours).
If you don't mind the long drive, you could drive.

duuuude. i say you fly... its too much of a hassle to drive... and if you enjoy sight seeing then the train! but i would definitly NOT drive...
my first option is the plane... but i think the train it cheaper... so... your choice...
