The fare isn't all that bad. You can travel from one end of this city to the other for just one swipe of a card. The city could not survive without the system. Something like 4 million people use it every day. It isn't perfect but it does the job quite well.

I am a New Yorker (currently living in Georgia) but I can tell you, most New Yorkers feel the same as you. They also feel that the subways are smelly, dirty and overcrowded.

Considering the alternatives however, the subway is still the fastest, cheapest and most dependable way to get around in New York.

The cost of driving your own vehicle, Express buses, Taxis and Gypsy cab fares add up pretty quickly (I know...I tried them all). Or, you end up fuming and stressing over the amount of time you spend sitting in traffic and fighting inconsiderate drivers, especially if you're talking about Mid-town!.

I lived in Long Island but worked in Manhattan. I had to take a taxi to and from my house every day to the Long Island Railroad ($6.00 a day + tips), the L.I.E. into Manhattan ($40 a month then - I can only imagine how much it must costs now), the subway from Grand Central Station up to the lower West Side ($25 a month in subway tokens) and a bus from the lower West Side thru Central Park to the Upper East side (another $25 in tokens, monthly)! On top of that, if I ran late I'd have to take a taxi from the West to the East side (between $6 and $8 depending on the taxi and the traffic)!

To drive my car would not have been much cheaper considering the daily parking fees, tolls and the cost of fuel and wear and tear on the vehicle. Also, it would call for me to leave Long Island an hour earlier (to avoid a lot of rush hour traffic) and staying in Manhattan an hour later (to avoid some of the rush hour traffic going back to Long Island)! In the final analysis for me, the subway trumped driving!

Do the math for your own personal situation and see if you'll come out better using another method of transportation. If so, go for it! If not, buy a newspaper, get yourself a good book or invest in an ipod and...."Take The A Train!"

Personally I think it sucks.

It's better then most subway systems in new york city, but don't compare to those outside of the US like in london, china even the dominican republic is doing better so far.

The trains are filthy, i advise you take hand sanitizers or babywipes with you when you ride so you can clean your hands the once your out.

The trains get delayed for the silliest reasons.

Slightly bad weather causes you to be late. a little rain and the

M train slows down and the L takes a bit longer.

I actually think the L is pretty nice, the new trains look cleaner, brighter and more comfortable.

Almost all train stations have homeless people sitting on the chairs or beging for money. Those guys that say they need money "not to do drugs but to stay off the street" yea right, go to school if you want to stay of the streets, get a job, stop buying 400 nikes and get some converse and save your cash.

The conductors are really rude and sometimes they dont even know where the train stops, and they should know that.

59th street is so packed in the morning that it can actually be dangerous. 49 St and Fulton St suffer the same fate.

I'm not saying it's the worse thing ever, I'm fortunate to have this system, or else I'd likely have to walk everyday from BK to manhattan.

cars are to expensive and there barely any parking availabled ever. unless your willing to pay alot f money for your own parking spot.

I like and appreciate the subway system. I love how I can ride for hours on end on one fair and go almost anywhere by taking the subway. Plus, the subway is faster than taking a bus.

One thing I love to do is to railfan. Unfortunately there aren't too many lines left where you can railfan.

Its the best way to get around the city. Without it, New York City will be like LA, car-city.

Good luck

It's cheap. 2.50 gets you anywhere within the 5 boroughs. I also like the new cars.
